Dog Harnesses
How do I choose the right harness size for my dog?
tart by measuring your dog carefully and comparing those measurements with the sizing information provided for the harness. Chest girth is especially important, but the correct fit also depends on the harness design and adjustment points. For step-by-step instructions, see our Dog Harness Size Guide.
How should a dog harness fit?
A dog harness should fit securely without restricting normal movement or breathing. The straps should stay in position during walking, and the harness should not shift excessively, rub sensitive areas, or allow enough looseness for your dog to easily back out. Learn more in our guide to How a Dog Harness Should Fit.
Can I use a HoundRoam harness for hiking?
The HoundRoam Adventure Dog Harness is designed for hiking, trail walks, everyday walks, and outdoor exploration. It includes an adjustable fit, front and back leash attachment options, a top handle for added control, and reflective details for visibility.
Sizing & Fit
What measurements do I need for a dog harness?
Chest girth is one of the most important measurements when choosing a dog harness. Depending on the harness design, neck measurements may also be useful. Measure your dog while standing naturally and compare the measurements with the sizing information for the specific harness. See How to Measure a Dog for a Harness for detailed instructions.
What if my dog is between two harness sizes?
If your dog falls between sizes, do not choose based on the size label alone. Compare your dog’s measurements with the adjustment range of the specific harness and consider body shape and where the straps will sit. The goal is a secure fit that allows normal movement without excessive looseness.
How do I know if a harness is too loose?
A harness may be too loose if it shifts significantly during movement, rotates around the body, or creates enough space for your dog to pull a leg or shoulder through the straps. Excessive looseness can also increase the risk of a dog backing out of the harness. For more information, see Why Dogs Escape Harnesses.

Outdoor Use & Safety
What should I check before hiking with my dog?
Before heading onto the trail, check your dog’s general condition, identification, harness fit, leash, water supply, weather conditions, and the requirements of the trail you plan to visit. Carry appropriate supplies and choose a route that matches your dog’s experience and ability. Use our Dog Hiking Checklist to help prepare for your hike.
Is a harness better than a collar for hiking?
A harness can provide additional control and distribute leash forces across a larger area of the body compared with attaching a leash directly to a collar. However, the best setup depends on your dog, the activity, fit, and equipment design. A properly fitted harness can be a practical option for hiking and outdoor walks.
Can a dog escape from a harness?
es. No harness should be assumed to be completely escape-proof. Poor fit, loose adjustment, body shape, backing-out behavior, and harness design can all affect security. Check the fit before each outing and monitor the harness during use. Learn more in Why Dogs Escape Harnesses.
